Walter H. Wertime, Sr. founded our law firm in 1896 and practiced law in the Capital District until his death in 1959. He was joined in legal practice by his son, Walter H. Wertime, Jr., who was still at the firm when Charles B. Ries joined the firm as a young lawyer in 1970. Stephen J. Van Ullen joined Charles B. Ries in the firm in 1980 and Frederick J. Schreyer joined the firm in 1999. The tradition of family members in the firm continued to the next generation, when Charles Ries’ daughter-in-law, Theresa Marinello Ries joined the firm in 2000. Stephen J. VanUllen joined the firm in 1980 and Frederick J. Schreyer in 1999. Today Charles B. Ries, Stephen J. VanUllen, Theresa Marinello Ries, and Frederick J. Schreyer continue Walter Sr.’s other tradition-providing a full range of legal services to families in Cohoes, Latham, Clifton Park, Waterford, Halfmoon, Watervliet, Albany, Troy, Schenectady and other areas of upstate New York.

Why is this lineage important? Because a family law firm knows how to solve family issues. We are not your usual law firm.
